Costume design for an opera The Makropulos Affair / Věc Makropulos

The Makropulos Affair is a three-act opera by Czech composer Leoš Janáček.
The libretto, based on a play of the same name by Karel Čapek,
was written by the composer between 1923 and 1925.

Transparency

My original source of inspiration is the tree. Trees are exposed to the elements; strong wind twists and bends their branches in one direction that distort their original shape.
As my father restores antique furniture, I have been always been fascinating with the quality of wood grain and the beautiful pattern it contains.
My collection references the pattern created by the grown rings that are used to circulate, twist and envelop the body.
The woodlouse that lives within the trees, with its striped body armour is also referenced within my pieces.
As my collection is inspired by strength of trees and woodlouse armour and delicacy of what is hidden inside. I have used contrasting fabrics- millinery netting with its stiff structure, yet flexible, and have combined this with net tulle and fluid jersey to conjure up the concept of transparent fragility.

Pattern

On these few Illustrations
I atempted to apply my patterns on the design.

To create the pattern
I played around in Photoshop with photos of bark,
stone, wawes and brush strokes.
Flip-flopped them around and changed the colour.
